A Fight of a Megastar from reel life to real life

It was started in 1982, when Amitabh bachchan was doing shooting for a film Coolie. No one cannot forget the dreadful Coolie accident that Big B met during the action scene with his co-star Puneet Issar. The accident was so deadly that he apparently clinically died for eleven minutes. But, he is a hero and we know that heroes never die. His wife Jaya Bachchan exclaimed, “Look his toe is moving”. But God knows that it was just a starting of his fitness dilemma.

B'town Megastar Amitabh Bachchan

When media approached him after year, he shared his thoughts with media and tells the public about his privileged life. He realized how he was lucky to have the best of medicines that was imported from abroad, while others who don’t have luxury to spend on costly treatment need to suffer glumly. In 1983, Big b talked about the accident  and said- “There were people who want to know about the detailed story of my Coolie accident. Whether it was the punch or the table or anything else, it is not important. What you should really get to know is about lack of medical facility when I was injured and the things that made me really aware of such factors when I was admitted in the hospital. I found that we have the brain and the talent to muddle-through with any emergency. But, we lack in facility, we lack in tools and equipments.

When I was in hospital, several helping hands approached from every quarter and I said in all superciliousness that there was help coming from abroad, doctors flown in from London, medicines are coming from Singapore, England and America as I was financially strong. But the thing is what if it was not me? If there was an ordinary poor man having the same condition, would he be able to afford similar costly treatment? This was the thing that distressed me a lot”.

Amitabh shares a story about a 3 years old girl who was admitted in the same Breach Candy hospital for gangrene in her lower portion. He said that- “I remember the moment when a doctor asked me about medicines for this girl who is almost reached to her last stage that is incurable. And then we got the medicine for her next day. She was cured and went to her home sweet home in three days. I was really happy for her, but the thing that again disturbed me was the reaction of her mother when she got to know that the medicines used by doctors are flown in for her girl. She said that whoever is getting these medicines and wherever these are coming from don’t tell me about the cost. I won’t be able to pay for it, tell the person who got the medicines to pay up. This is the thing that distressed me and I wonder how many people in our country are suffering from such stages in their lives as they are financially week to afford such luxurious treatment.

As we said before, it was just a starting for his health troubles; Big b was stricken with another life-threatening disease Myasthenia Gravis. It is a neuromuscular disorder that causes weakness of the voluntary (skeletal) muscles and tiredness. It can be happen in any stage of the life. In Amitabh’s case, he was 41 when this disease struck him because of the heavy consumption of medicines after the accident. Due to this, he had to reduce his workload and stress level.

In November 2005, another health ailment hit hard to Bachchan. He thought that it was a gastro problem, but later it turned out to be diverticulitis of the small intestine. Doctors said that this problem is usually count in exceptions and Big b could have been in a critical situation, if they didn’t get attended on time. Patients who are suffering from this disease have weaker walls of large and small intestine that lead to an inflammation. By consuming Hi-fiber diet, one can prevent himself from such ailment that can be cure by antibiotics. It was a critical case of Bachchan and operation was must. And because of which, Amitabh was in hospital for two months.

Another disease called Liver Cirrhosis plight made Amitabh Bachchan weak. Some years back, he revealed his suffering from Liver Cirrhosis even though he does not drink alcohol. Now the question is if he is not an alcoholic, then what exactly the reason behind this disease. Actually, it was the time when Amitabh met with an accident while shooting Coolie. During the surgery, a lot of blood required and around 200 people donated blood from which 60 blood bottles were collected and injected into him.

The problem that found later was some of the blood from unknown donor was infected with the Australian antigen Hepatitis. In 1982, due to the urgency of the matter, there were no immediate tests to find out this hepatitis and so, it went into the system of Big b and attacked his liver. In the MRI report, doctors discovered that 25 per cent of his liver had been destroyed. “This disease usually associated with an alcoholic and I was a non-alcoholic, a teetotaler suffering from ailment that entered in me through blood transfusion from a donor” he added.

On October 11, 2008 Amitabh troubled with breathlessness and stomach ache. The History battered him once more and he was taken to the Lilavati Hospital for treatment.

It was not less than a Bollywood movie in which hero bounce back again after a huge fight. Our hero Amitabh Bachchan somewhat accepted the fate and shared thoughts on his social networking blog: “ I sometimes lament the fact that I do not have the benefit of a complete and disorder-free body structure, and I wonder how wonderful it would be to be normal again. But this was my fate and I shall accept it with a smile.”
